Complete Text of Patricia Dahl's Message

In April 2001 New York city's sister community of Alto Naya, Colombia, suffered one of the bloodiest massacres in Colombian history.

100 paramilitaries entered the area and killed over 100 people, although the official count is only 40. (Details at http://www.colombiajournal.org/colombia178.htm )

This week, 100 men dressed as military personnel have entered the area unannounced. At least 30 of them covered their faces with masks. They did not give any public notice or reason for their presence to members of the community. They are now detaining people at random, and preventing food and medicine to enter the communities.

This is not the legitimate deportment of a national army. This does not conform to the human rights certifications requirement needed for continued u.s. funding of the Colombian army, nor does it conform to human rights certifications required for the recent congressional approval to fund colombia's paramilitary demobilization.

We urge you to please take time out of your busy days to write letters to the following addresses and to your congressional representatives. (see below)  please include in your letters:

Laura Kirkpatrick, Political Division, US EMBASSY IN BOGOTA. kirkpatricklh@state.gov

Demand the respect for human rights promised by your government as it taxes your earnings for "peacekeeping missions."

Please distribute this message.  Thank you!!!!!
